Hot chocolate bombs may have had their moment, but in San Antonio, Texas, there’s a new bomb in town.
Ruby Wilder, of the taco delivery service Ruby’s Krafty Tacos, began selling her heart-shaped michelada bombs in January after seeing the widespread success of the hot cocoa variety. Her bombs, which turn beer into a flavor-filled cocktail similar to a Bloody Mary, have proved so popular, she’s been besieged by a rash of orders.
“In Texas, micheladas are popular so I decided to play off the trend and created michelada bombs instead,” she said.
Micheladas are typically made with beer, lime juice, assorted chili-based sauces, spices and tomato juice, but Wilder’s take that kick up a notch with various chili powders, chamoy and spicy tamarind candies that float to the top when they explode. Add the bomb to your beer and within seconds, you’ve got yourself a tasty (and fun!) libation to pair with brunch or one of Wilder’s homemade tacos.
The bombs have become so popular, they’ve become a permanent menu item. She’s also now shipping them across the country. Still, she hasn’t given up on her true passion: authentic handmade tacos.
“When I was a little girl, my mother and I would travel to Mexico and as soon as we crossed the border we would go straight to a taco stand,” she said. “The flavor was so different, and I wanted to recreate that feeling of enjoying a taste I couldn’t find anywhere else.”
Wilder upped her game by customizing boxes for her products that she designs herself. “I can hand draw anything,” she said. “I’ve decorated boxes for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and graduations.”
Michelada bombs are sold three to a tin. You can purchase them online from the Ruby’s Krafty Tacos Facebook page or Instagram account.
