Filippi’s Pizza Grotto has been a San Diego institution for generations. Starting out in Little Italy back in 1950, they now have several restaurants around the county. This is the location in Escondido. Now Filippi’s is best known for their pizzas, but sometimes I like to get a classic, heavy red sauce dish. Here’s a great half-order of lasagna with meat sauce. I had to lay down after eating all this! I always love the vibe here. It’s a very comfortable, no-frills, old-school establishment. I have eaten lasagna at many Italian restaurants across America. One of my favorites will always be Filippi’s! Theirs is very cheese forward so I always recommend adding a meatball or sausage (or both) to round it all out.
