Wanna know what destination food really means? Ask Greg, the proprietor at Pickles in the Longwood section of Orlando. “They come from Tampa. They come from Miami. They come from everywhere, for the best corned beef this side of NY!” So we tried the corned beef. Greg did not lead us astray. I went standard, corned beef on rye. My son hit the Reuben. Both featured thick-slice, almost chunked, rich, unctuous, flavorful bites of true-deli heaven. Mine was warm and not too fatty and just a bit of crunchy bark about every third bite. The Reuben hit the CB/melted cheese/sauerkraut trifecta just right. Enjoy this guilty pleasure amidst the crates of Dr. Brown’s, Junior’s Cheesecake, and Brooklyn Lager nesting beneath vintage Daily News headlines championing the Yankees. Were I not headed back to NY immediately after lunch, I would say I felt right at home.
