Chilaquiles
Being called “Best Breakfast in Chicago” by USA Today can raise expectations. We stumbled upon Kanela Breakfast Club on a Sunday walk through Andersonville. A quick peek at the dishes being served out of doors convinced us to put our name in for a sidewalk table. Seated quite quickly, the menu was daunting. Everything sounded delicious. I opted for the sunnyside up egg duo + avocado-topped chilaquiles. This is a standard Mexican dish that has a lot of room to go wrong. This one did not! The eggs were perfect. The corn tortilla chips held their crunch, crowning a saucy, chorizo and queso pool just beneath the surface. As the gravy infiltrated the dish, every bite got better and better. I can rarely get through a dish this large. I did, and found myself thinking about the lemon blueberry pancakes for next time.
